The last couple of weeks, we have been relaxing on the beach at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. We try to go every summer, and it never gets old. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy your family.
One week is never enough, so we’ve been going for 2 weeks the last few years. Our relaxation vacation in Hilton Head was wonderful! We stayed at a condo that allowed us to bring our chocolate labrador retriever. is 10 years old and doesn’t travel very well. But….since he has separation anxiety, we can’t bear to board him at a kennel. We did that once, and it wasn’t pretty! Never again! If you’re wondering what you can do in Hilton Head Island, SC….read on. At the bottom of this post, I have included several links that you can browse through to see if Hilton Head Island is right for you.
Evidently, we chose a great time to go because our condo complex, Barrington Villas in the Palmetto Dunes Plantation, wasn’t crowded at all. We had lots of pool time, and we never had to worry about finding a poolside chair. We usually travel over the 4th of July holiday, and many families have that same idea. This year we went the second week of June, and it was heavenly. The temperatures at HHI were lower than they were in Ohio, and that usually never happens.
My idea of a relaxing vacation is doing as little as possible! We walked to the beach in the morning where I enjoyed reading a book under our umbrella and watching my hubby and son play frisbee. We took leisurely walks on the beach, and then would go to the condo for lunch. I usually hung out in the condo for a while, and then would go to the pool in the afternoon. Our main decision was what restaurant we would be going to for dinner. 🙂
I appreciate so much that we are fortunate enough to take a summer vacation because I know many families are not able to do so. I’m always very grateful for our vacation time each summer and being able to enjoy these moments with my family.
One evening after dinner, we went out on the back patio of our condo and were surprised to find an unwelcome guest in the pond.
Yikes! My son took this photo with his camera. He wasn’t this close to the gator, thank goodness! He used a telephoto lens that allowed him to get a nice close up shot. We only saw this alligator once, so I’m not sure where he went. After that, I was always looking out for him (or her) when walking past the pond to the beach. I understand that they can run pretty fast when they want to.
You can see in this photo below how close the pond was to our condo. We were on the first floor, but the building sits well above ground level so there was no way for Mr. Gator to find his way onto our patio.
I wish our daughter was able to join us, but she lives across the country in Colorado. It was a fun and memorable vacation with these 2 gentlemen.
If you are ever looking for a nice place to vacation on the east coast, you can’t go wrong visiting Hilton Head Island. It’s the perfect place to go for a relaxation vacation! There are a multitude of delicious restaurants, many great golf courses, shopping galore, bicycle rentals and numerous bike trails, and some of the most perfect white beaches on the eastern coast. Bring your sunscreen and your smile. You will meet many wonderful, friendly people.
Here are some restaurants that we visited that I’d recommend you try when in Hilton Head. Many of them have early bird menus, usually from 5:00 – 5:45, if you can make it out of the pool by then! If you can make a reservation, that certainly helps, too.
Where to eat at Hilton Head:
A Few Facts About Hilton Head Island courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce:
There is a bridge from the mainland to the Island. You do not have to cross in a boat.
Hilton Head has an airport that offers daily flights.
There are 42 square miles of semi-tropical landscape and over 50 miles of public pathways and nature trails.
Hilton Head Island has 12 miles of wide, hard-packed beaches with lots of public access areas. The tide levels change as much as 6-8 feet every 6 hours.
What to do in Hilton Head Island:
If you enjoy playing golf, Hilton Head has many beautiful golf courses. There are 24 on-island championship golf courses, and over 40 courses in the Hilton Head Island – Bluffton area for you to play.
These are just a few outstanding courses on the island. There are many, many more!
Bicyling is popular on the island. Depending on which plantation you are staying at, you can rent bikes for the week to ride on the beach and on the bike paths. If you are riding on the beach, ALWAYS make sure you ride into the wind when you begin. Trust me on this one!
Although not quite as popular, but it’s still fun, you can rent kayaks or canoes to paddle around in the lagoons. It is relaxing (if your husband paddles and you pretend to) and you’ll see abundant wildlife. There are gators in the lagoons, so don’t jump out or flip over!
Family Fun Activities (For adults and kiddos):
If you have children, you’ll love Hilton Head. There are many family fun activities to try.
Greg Russel – Harbour Town – Greg has been performing under the old Liberty tree in Harbour Town for over 30 years. This is fun for children and adults. He also has a great Bubble Gum Cruise. Your kids and you will love this.
Sea Monkey Rentals – Jet Skis, Boats, Kayaks, Paddle Boards, Nature Tours
Of course, my idea of a Relaxation Vacation, is doing what you want, when you want! You don’t have to spend a lot of money for your family to have a great time. I do have a few extra pounds from eating out so often that I packed on over the past couple weeks, but it was all worth it. Now that we’re back home, I’ll start exercising more and eating less, so I’ll be ready to visit HHI again next summer.
